Who We Are
Brief History: For 40 years, the people of Christ the King Church have gathered regularly to hear God's word and receive God's sacraments, to welcome persons into the body of Christ, to pray for peace, to support one another through joys and sorrows, to nurture each other in the Gospel, to work for justice, and to go forth to serve God and others in the course of everyday life.
The people of Christ the King first began meeting for worship on September 18, 1960. Services were held at Phillips School located on Route 27 just north of Henderson Road. The Congregation was officially organized on March 10, 1961. The present building was dedicated on April 19, 1964. The house next to the church building was purchased from the National Bank of New Jersey and moved from New Road to its present location in 1970. This facility served as residence of the congregation's pastor until 1991.
Christ the King is a growing mission focused congregation. In addition to persons who have been a part of the congregation from the start, many of the people you meet here have recently become affiliated with us. Several of our families include members of other churches or religious traditions. We are people who value diversity, inclusiveness, hospitality, service, witness, nurture, and ministry in daily life.
Since its organization, Christ
the King has been served by 5 pastors: the Rev. Dwight A. Huseman, the
Rev. Ralph Spears, the Rev. Elizabeth Waid, the Rev. Terry Wimmer, and
the current pastor, the Rev. Fred Schott, who has been the
congregation's pastor since 1997.
Pastor
Fred Schott
has served as pastor of congregations in Philadelphia, Pa. and West
Windsor, N.J. Before becoming a full time pastor at Christ the
King, he worked for 12 years as a family therapist, counselor, and
clinical director for behavior health care services in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania. In addition to his divinity degree, Pastor Schott
has a Master's degree in counseling and a Master's degree in family
therapy. Pastor Schott and his wife Jan Westrick live in
Princeton, New Jersey. Jan teaches at Princeton Day School and is
director of the Princeton Girlchoir.
The Congregation
Council is a group of eight to twelve voting members of the
congregation. Each term is for two years and a member can only serve
three
consecutive terms before leaving council for two years.
