Who We Are
Brief History: For 50 years, the people of Christ the King Church have gathered regularly to hear God's word and receive God's sacraments, to welcome persons into the body of Christ, to pray for peace, to support one another through joys and sorrows, to nurture each other in the Gospel, to work for justice, and to go forth to serve God and others in the course of everyday life.
The people of Christ the King first began meeting for worship on September 18, 1960. Services were held at Phillips School located on Route 27 just north of Henderson Road. The Congregation was officially organized on March 10, 1961. The present building was dedicated on April 19, 1964. The house next to the church building was purchased from the National Bank of New Jersey and moved from New Road to its present location in 1970. This facility served as residence of the congregation's pastor until 1991.
Christ the King is a growing mission focused congregation. In addition to persons who have been a part of the congregation from the start, many of the people you meet here have recently become affiliated with us. Several of our families include members of other churches or religious traditions. We are people who value diversity, inclusiveness, hospitality, service, witness, nurture, and ministry in daily life.
Since
its organization, Christ
the King has been served by 8 pastors: the Rev. Dwight A. Huseman, the
Rev. Ralph Spears, the Rev. Elizabeth Waid, the Rev. Terry Wimmer, the
Rev. Fred Schott, Interim Pastor Sara Olson-Smith, Vice Pastor Walt
Wagner, and our current pastor, the Rev. Kimberly T. Carlson.

at a special meeting of the
congregation, the people of Christ the King called Kimberly Carlson to
become our pastor. Christ the King is
her first call. Pastor Kim’s first day
with us was on March 7th and she presided for the first time on March
9th, Ash Wednesday.
She was ordained on April 30, 2011 by
Bishop E. Roy Riley and installed as Pastor of Christ the King on May
1, when
we celebrated our 50th anniversary at a special service
followed by a luncheon at Pierre’s. |

Sierra Oh began serving as our Music Director in September, 2010 – playing organ and piano for our worship services and directing the choir. A senior at Westminster Choir College, Sierra is majoring in Sacred Music. She is a gifted organ player and has played at several Episcopal and Lutheran parishes before coming to Christ the King. Sierra was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and loves being in New Jersey, despite not being able to wear sandals year round. Here at Christ the King, we are blessed not only by her musical skills and leading us in song, but by her kindness, joy and her deep faith. Sierra also joined Christ the King as a new member on Reformation Sunday, 2010. Welcome, Sierra, we are glad that you are here! |
